Learning intrinsic safety in practice.

Workshop: Intrinsic safety according to EN IEC 60079–11

Learn in a hands-on workshop how to apply the requirements of EN IEC 60079–11 correctly and systematically transfer them to real-world engineering tasks.

In combination with the seminar “Blueprint Intrinsic Safety”, you will apply the structured approach presented there directly to a concrete circuit example and work through the complete intrinsic safety concept step by step.

This will significantly deepen your understanding of the normative requirements and strengthen your ability to apply intrinsic safety in a consistent and compliant manner.

What you can expect

In this workshop, you will actively work on technical documentation, perform intrinsic safety calculations, and evaluate protection concepts. Following a clear blueprint for intrinsic safety, we will jointly develop step by step how an intrinsically safe system is structured, documented in compliance with the standard, and technically assessed.

Aims of the workshop

The aim of this workshop is to provide you with the necessary knowledge and practical tools to properly assess, calculate and document intrinsically safe devices in accordance with IEC/EN 60079–11.

The circuits from the training example serve as a basis for carrying out calculations, evaluating protection concepts and familiarising yourself with typical practical requirements. The knowledge imparted can be transferred directly to your own development projects and helps you to design intrinsically safe devices safely and in compliance with standards.

You will learn how to create and organise technical documents in such a way that they meet the requirements of a test centre. Practical examples and real-life tasks will enable you to safely assess protection concepts and find the right technical solution for your product.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • safely apply the requirements of IEC/EN 60079–11

  • Carry out intrinsic safety calculations independently

  • Check circuit diagrams and layouts in accordance with standards

  • Compare and evaluate protection concepts

  • compile complete documentation for certification

  • create correct labelling for intrinsically safe devices

  • and implement the basic principles learnt directly in their own development projects

The workshop strengthens your understanding of the entire process — from the initial planning and selection of suitable protective measures to the final documentation for the certification body.

Workshop contents

  • Application of IEC/EN 60079–11
Deepen your knowledge of the requirements of the standard and its implementation.

  • Inspection of circuit diagrams and layouts
Recognise weak points and check whether all safety-relevant requirements have been met.

  • Intrinsic safety calculations
Determine limit values for voltage, current and power and carry out exemplary calculations.

  • Labelling intrinsically safe devices
Work out the correct device labelling including the associated documentation.

  • Parameterising the device interfaces
Define limit values for interfaces and familiarise yourself with their technical protection.

  • Checking separation distances
Check the necessary minimum distances on circuit boards and in housings.

  • Practical example from device technology
Plan and evaluate a battery-operated IoT device and decide on a suitable protection concept.

Practical example: Battery-operated IoT device

In the workshop, we will jointly analyse a battery-powered IoT device for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. We discuss different protection concepts, their advantages and disadvantages and work together to find the optimum solution.

The focus is on the following topics:

  • Requirements for the housing

  • Testing and selecting suitable battery cells

  • Electronic current limitation

  • Evaluation of the use of potting compounds

  • Standardised documentation of the device

The aim is to develop a concept that fulfils all requirements for explosion protection, is functional and cost-conscious, and could be submitted as complete documentation to a testing or certification body.

Documents

The workshop is structured like a real certification project. You will receive all the documents that are also required by a test centre for the approval of intrinsically safe devices. The documents are fully organised and contain a structured description so that you can understand and apply the entire certification process in a practical manner.

You will receive important documents on site in paper form. For reasons of sustainability, we do not print out all drawings and data sheets — we provide them to you digitally as a download and on a USB stick.

The documents provided are prepared in such a way that they meet the requirements for subsequent submission to a test centre. This not only gives you an insight into the technical specifications, but also valuable information on the practical implementation of the documentation.
